Pioneering the future of aging

In recognition of Healthy Aging Month this September, the University of Minnesota is highlighting innovative research and community initiatives focused on improving the health and well-being of older adults. Researchers are exploring new ways to promote healthier aging, prevent age-related diseases, and help people maintain independence and quality of life.

University of Minnesota researchers at the Masonic Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism (MIBAM) are investigating ways to eliminate senescent cells, often called “zombie cells.” These damaged cells stop dividing but remain active, contributing to chronic inflammation and age-related diseases. Researchers have helped advance senolytics, drugs designed to selectively remove senescent cells, while ongoing work is identifying different types of senescent cells to support the development of targeted treatments.

Research led by Erjia Cui, an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, found that physical activity was a stronger predictor of mortality than several major health conditions and risk factors, including obesity, diabetes, smoking, and heart disease. The study found that daily step counts were the strongest individual measure associated with lifespan, highlighting the importance of regular movement for healthy aging.

Christina Camell, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota, is studying how aging affects the immune system. Her research identified a pathway involving the protein GDF3 that may contribute to persistent inflammation in aging macrophages. Blocking this pathway reduced inflammation and improved survival during severe infections in laboratory models, suggesting a potential approach for reducing harmful inflammation in older adults.

Beyond laboratory research, Project REACH (Rural Experts Advancing Community Health) is helping rural community leaders develop strategies to improve local healthcare. The program is also examining barriers that can delay access to new health technologies for older adults, with a focus on making innovative healthcare solutions more accessible and affordable in rural communities.

Together, these efforts highlight how aging research, physical activity, immune health, and healthcare innovation can contribute to longer, healthier, and more independent lives.
