Nestlé and NTU Singapore to establish research lab focusing on longevity, women’s health

Published on:

This multi year partnership between Nestlé and Nanyang Technological University brings together Nestlé’s global research capabilities and Singapore based R&D expertise with NTU’s advanced scientific knowledge and world class infrastructure. Since its establishment in 1980, Nestlé’s regional R&D center in Southeast Asia has driven innovation across key product categories, including ready to drink beverages and plant based alternatives. The collaboration is particularly timely as aging populations across Asia grow rapidly, with increasing evidence highlighting nutrition’s role in biological aging pathways and long term health. By strengthening scientific understanding in this area, the partnership aims to develop solutions that enhance healthy longevity and help bridge the health span gap.

By combining their expertise, Nestlé and Nanyang Technological University will explore how targeted nutrition, dietary habits, and lifestyle factors influence biological aging processes. The research will inform the development of services and solutions addressing age related health concerns such as metabolic health, mobility, sleep, and menopause. Emphasizing that nutritional needs evolve with age, Ryan Carvalho, head of Nestlé Research, highlighted the critical role of nutrition in supporting long term health. He further noted that the partnership will strengthen scientific evidence on nutrition’s impact on healthy longevity, particularly during midlife and beyond, guiding the creation of science based, consumer focused nutritional solutions.

Spearheaded by researchers from Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, this collaboration leverages anonymized data from the Health for Life in Singapore (HELIOS) Study to better understand how lifestyle, diet, and biology influence health outcomes and guide nutritional solutions for improved well being. The HELIOS Study, led by LKCMedicine in partnership with National Healthcare Group and Imperial College London, is a large population cohort initiative aimed at identifying environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors driving chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, drawing on data collected over a decade from around 50,000 adults in Singapore.

This latest initiative with Nestlé reflects Nanyang Technological University’s commitment to translating advanced scientific research into meaningful health outcomes through strong academia industry collaboration, said Christian Wolfrum. By leveraging insights from the HELIOS study alongside interdisciplinary research expertise and Nestlé’s strengths in nutrition science, the partnership aims to develop impactful, evidence based solutions for Singapore, Asia, and beyond. The joint research program is further supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board, highlighting its significance for regional innovation and public health advancement.
