Million euro funding for extensive research on older adults’ wellbeing

Published on:

The RES AGE project has received approximately €3 million in funding to develop evidence-based, cost-effective approaches to promote resilience, mental wellbeing, and healthy ageing. Åbo Akademi University will focus on inequalities related to language, culture, and regional contexts, using data from the GERDA database and other long-term research sources.

The project will also use proteomic profiling and lifestyle data to identify early biomarkers that can support healthier lifestyle choices. Through register data, interventions, interviews, biomarker analyses, and advanced statistical methods, RES AGE aims to strengthen prevention, reduce inequalities, delay care needs, and support more cost-effective healthy ageing.

The consortium brings together researchers from multiple disciplines and universities across Finland, including expertise in health sciences, social policy, neuroscience, psychology, and economics. The collaboration will provide a broad understanding of the social, psychological, biological, and economic factors influencing resilience and mental health in later life.

The project will combine research findings with practical prevention and lifestyle strategies to help older adults maintain wellbeing and independence while supporting more equitable and sustainable approaches to ageing and care.
