GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs Can Slow Aging and Extend Life Span, Mouse Study Suggests

GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide, marketed as Ozempic and Wegovy, have gained widespread attention for their role in treating obesity and type 2 diabetes. These drugs mimic a natural hormone that promotes feelings of fullness and helps control blood sugar. They are also used for certain cardiovascular, kidney, and sleep apnea-related benefits.

A new study published in Nature suggests that semaglutide may have another potential benefit: slowing aspects of aging. Researchers found that daily treatment extended the lifespan of older female mice by about 12% while reducing several biological markers associated with aging.

The researchers studied 20-month-old female mice, roughly comparable to 60-year-old humans. Mice receiving semaglutide lived a median of 834 days, compared with 742 days for untreated mice. The treated animals were also more active and performed better in tests of physical ability, memory, exploration, and glucose regulation. Their tissues showed lower levels of inflammation and DNA damage.

Researchers also compared semaglutide with calorie restriction. Although both approaches produced similar effects on lifespan and some physical abilities, semaglutide-treated mice showed additional improvements in memory, exploration, and glucose tolerance. This suggests that its potential longevity effects may extend beyond simply reducing food intake.

However, the findings are still preliminary. The study involved only female mice, and researchers say more studies are needed to determine whether the results apply to males or humans. Potential concerns such as muscle loss and increased frailty in older adults also need to be carefully considered before semaglutide can be viewed as a longevity treatment.
