Could age help explain why psychedelic studies reach different conclusions?

Published on:

A recent study by researchers at Durham University, UK, published in Scientific Reports, explored whether age influences the relationship between lifetime psychedelic use and mental health.

The study analyzed data from 1,088 adults who reported their psychedelic use, mystical experiences, anxiety, depression, wellbeing, and life satisfaction. Researchers found that classic psychedelic use was associated with lower anxiety and depression symptoms among younger adults, but these associations became weaker with increasing age. Younger users were also more likely to report mystical experiences, which may partly explain these age-related differences.

The study also found no significant differences in overall wellbeing between the groups. Non-classic psychedelic users reported higher life satisfaction than non-users, but this finding did not meet the study’s stricter statistical threshold.

However, the study was cross-sectional and cannot establish that psychedelic use directly caused better mental health outcomes. Factors such as self-selection, pre-existing psychological differences, and retrospective reporting may have influenced the results. The researchers suggest that age and mystical experiences may be important factors to consider in future research on psychedelics and mental health.
